I create digital narratives and code DIY alternatives to commercial AI. I began to create AIs in 2020 when everyday interactions with AI were yet to be imagined. I continue to make AIs as a counterpoint to exploitatitive and coercive big AI.
I code and train Small Language Models for creative projects as radical and ethical alternatives to commercial AI's Large Language Models. The differences between these and my work are:
Large Language Models
-
are trained on datasets of material stolen from writers and artists plus online material that may contain and reproduce offensive language.
-
use low pay workers with few labour rights to categorise disturbing material.
-
often own your work or the rights to it and may charge you to continue to use or access your own work.
My Small Language Models
-
are trained on limited and accountable datasets: no stealing!
-
are made by me and people I pay fairly to help me.
-
access is owned by the creators and commissioners of the work.
